I was checking out the new offerings from Common Sense Media today when I got what looked like a pop-up ad for Wide Open School. “That’s funny,” I thought. “This site doesn’t have ads.” So I clicked it. And wow. Just wow.
In partnership with what appears to be anyone who is anyone in the field of online content, Common Sense Media has put together a show-stopper of a website packed with resources for teachers, kids, and families.
The resources include things like:
- Daily schedules with curated content for every grade level
- Hundreds of online lessons and videos
- Information about how to set up a virtual classroom
- Resources for supporting students with special needs
- Virtual field trips
- Physical activities
- Social-emotional support
- Links to resources for low-cost devices, Internet access, and free meals/nutritional support
Everything is in an easy-to-use interface with colorful icons that make it inviting and accessible to even the youngest children.
As you would expect from an organization dedicated to children’s online safety and well-being, the site also adheres to the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) and promises it will not collect any user data.
If you’re a teacher looking for high-quality online content, a parent getting used to the “new normal” of homeschooling, or just someone who is curious to see what kinds of resources are out there, I recommend checking it out.
